Sophie’s World, Vol. 2: A Graphic History of Philosophy

Sophie’s World—the internationally bestselling exploration of philosophy by Jostein Gaarder—is reimagined in this graphic novel series that brings the ideas shaping modern thought into clear, visual focus while continuing its inquiry into meaning, identity, and reality. In volume 2, as Sophie’s philosophical education deepens, she moves beyond the foundations laid by the ancient thinkers and into the ideas that define the modern era. From Descartes through contemporary philosophy, her lessons challenge earlier assumptions about knowledge, consciousness, freedom, and responsibility, asking how—and whether—human beings can find meaning in a changing world. This second volume presents modern philosophical movements through narrative storytelling and dynamic illustration, translating abstract ideas such as doubt, reason, individuality, and existence into scenes that remain grounded and accessible. By following Sophie’s evolving perspective, readers are invited to reflect on how these ideas continue to influence personal identity, ethics, and everyday life. Volume 2 completes the two‑part graphic adaptation of Sophie’s World, offering a visual history of philosophy that emphasizes philosophy not simply as a body of ideas, but as an ongoing search for meaning that remains deeply relevant today.
